Rafael Martinez is an eager recipient of the 2024 Timothy P. O’Shaughnessy Foundation’s Lifelong Learning Scholarship.

Rafael is a native of Wichita, KS, and the second of four siblings by parents Karlee Rose and Fernando Martinez. They instilled in him passion and a strong work ethic, yet stressed the importance of compassion and understanding.

At Maize South, Rafael would spend his time after school running for the Cross Country and
Track teams. He served as his high school’s Business Professionals of America (BPA) Chapter President and as the State’s Secretary. Rafael was also a Chapter Officer for the National Honor Society. He also participated in debate and was delighted to engage in discussions over important international security issues.

At the University of Kansas, Rafael is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Economics with
aspirations to dual-major in Finance and study Economics at a graduate level. He wants to use his knowledge in this field to direct business and aims to conduct business at an international level. Rafael’s time in BPA, as a competitor and leader, contributed to his desire to pursue Economics as a career.

Rafael is involved in KU’s Economics Club and regularly volunteers at the Lied Center of Kansas, his local arts center. He is excited to study abroad and continue to stay involved on campus and in Lawrence.

Rafael is very excited about what his future has to offer and is indebted to the Timothy P.
O’Shaughnessy Foundation for allowing him to pursue new, exciting opportunities. He is excited to see what doors have opened and to contribute to the Foundation itself.
