Brenneman Spends 5 Months Abroad

Classical School

Carson Brenneman (Classical School, 2022) spent this spring and summer studying abroad at Otto-Friedrich University in Bamberg, a historic town in Bavaria’s Upper Franconia region of Germany. In addition to his academic studies, he became involved with a student ministry group called SMD-Bamberg, which helped him build meaningful connections with other students and engage more deeply with local life. His experience extended far beyond the classroom, as he immersed himself in the region’s vibrant culture by attending local festivals and adapting to daily rhythms that shaped his understanding of German society.

Carson explored numerous cities across both Germany and Austria. His travels included stops in Bamberg, Berlin, Nuremberg, Munich, Heidelberg, Würzburg, Erlangen, Coburg, Bayreuth, Regensburg, Salzburg, and Vienna. One particularly special moment for Carson was attending Easter service at the Berlin Cathedral, a personal milestone he had hoped to reach since his first visit to the cathedral during a freshman-year spring break trip.

Reflecting on his time abroad, Carson shared: “Spending five months in Germany gave me the opportunity to learn not only about German culture, but also America in contrast and the common values and history which bind us together in Western civilization.”

Brenneman Shares Summer in D.C.

Classical School

Carson Brenneman, Classical School of Wichita, 2022, spent his summer living in Haymarket, Virginia, where he commuted to Washington, D.C., as an intern for Senator Jerry Moran. He took calls from constituents, sorted mail and emails, took tours, attended hearings, and performed other miscellaneous tasks such as taking documents to the cloakroom, retrieving a ticket to the Netanyahu address from the Senate Sargent at Arms office, and escorting guests through police lines and the capitol grounds during the riot at Union Station.

Carson’s favorite moments included giving Capitol tours to fellow Kansans, attending the Boeing and Secret Service hearings, and exploring D.C., especially the historic churches.

During a week of his internship, the Young America Foundation National Convention took place in D.C. Since Carson is the Vice-Chairman of the YAF chapter at OSU, he attended the evening programming after work, noting that it was a lot of fun. They enjoyed great speakers like the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, as shared in Carson’s photos.

“I really enjoyed working in the office with people who cared that I both had fun and gained first-hand experience of how government works day to day. Senator Moran and his staff are very kind people and were a pleasure to work with,” Carson reflected.
