Born in Salisbury England, Harry was raised alongside his younger brother, Charlie, by his parents Richard and Joanna Ling. In his youth, Harry was fortunate enough to travel the world with his family. After his initial move from England, Harry lived in Australia, Quebec Canada, and eventually Kansas (since 2015). He attributes his travels to building his adaptability and inherent strong work ethic. Harry attended the Wichita Collegiate High School, and is now a freshman at the University of Florida.
Harry’s time at Wichita Collegiate School was characterized by his large involvement. He was the captain of the boys swim team, senior class vice-president in Stuco, founder of the Collegiate Chess Club, and a graduate of their Leadership Academy. Harry also filled his time participating in various math and design competitions for his school. His activities in high school.
More recently, at the University of Florida, Harry has worked to remain extremely involved. Currently, he is completing “new member projects” for the Florida Rocket Lab (where he is designing a collegiate level liquid rocket engine,) and Gator Motorsports (where he is working to become a member of the Aerodynamics team for the car). On top of this, he is pursuing options for undergraduate research in Aerospace for next semester.
Harry values staying active and proficient in all facets of life, as such he has kept very busy outside of school as well. At the age of 17 Harry qualified as a private pilot, and now seeks his Instrument Rating in addition. He held a six-week NASA internship over the summer, working with the Kansas Cosmosphere; a facility which he attributes to initially cultivating his love for aerospace. Going into his senior year of High school, he stayed busy with another internship at the National Institute of Aviation Research as an aircraft component modeler. The most impactful position he held however, was his role as a telescope operator and educator at Lake Afton Public Observatory. The great sense of meaning he finds from helping others learn drives him to continue to pursue his work as a volunteer.
Harry is extremely grateful to be a part of the University of Florida’s “Honors College,” and “University Research Scholars Society,” where he will continue to challenge himself and explore in all nuances of life. He aims for a career in the flight test industry, innovating and flying at the cutting edge of our understanding, with a goal of tangible positive impact in the world.
Harry is deeply grateful for the opportunities he has received, and his future with the O’Shaughnessy Foundation, truly valuing the mentorship and support that is to come.
