About Tim

“Consciousness is more than the sum of parts; And the process by which we go out to discover the world...is the same process by which we define who we are."

-Tim

Timothy was born on September 15, 1984, the 4th of 6 children born to Gerry and Priscilla O’Shaughnessy. Growing up, Tim was adventurous, curious, and sometimes a bit stubborn. Like most kids, he enjoyed spending time with friends, family, and playing sports, but in particular he was always interested in exploring the world around him. From an early age, he was known to constantly pepper his family members with the question, “why?”

Channeling this intellectual curiosity could at times be a challenge, as he frequently would prefer to spend his time teaching himself subjects that interested him over spending time studying things that didn’t, which sometimes meant teachers would have trouble keeping his attention. Nevertheless, it was common for him to surprise his teachers and classmates, whether it was from creating his own physics experiments that were outside the bounds of the taught curriculum, or composing his own music by piano for a school assembly. Tim always marched to the beat of his own drum, and was always willing to go outside conventional expectations to do the unusual and extraordinary.

In high school, Tim proved to be someone who was well liked and respected by his classmates and friends, always willing to reach beyond the usual cliques and be kind and get to know people from different backgrounds. In the words of one high school classmate, “Tim was the only person I ever met who I never once heard say a bad thing about another person.” This pattern of humility, caring and gentleness, played out over and over throughout his adult life.

Following graduation from Wichita Collegiate School, Timothy attended the University of Notre Dame. There he found a curriculum that matched his interests and passion for learning. He double majored, earning degrees in The Program of Liberal Studies (an intense “Great Books” curriculum), one of the most prestigious degrees at Notre Dame, as well as Mandarin Chinese, in which he eventually became fluent in speaking, writing and reading.

In his junior year, through Notre Dame, he attended Beijing University, the premier school in all of China. His performance there soon translated to acceptance to the exclusive IUP program at Qinghua University, another elite Chinese university and its top technical school.

Between semesters of his undergraduate studies in China, Timothy continued to exhibit his adventurous streak by going to work in a remote area of South America, near the Straits of Magellan. There, he went to work for a fledgling oil company that was nearly out of money. Tim lived in the field and had worked on several wells that had come up dry. When they were down to the last zone on their last well, he was working on the rig as they discovered their first oil and saved the company. The well became the foundation of the now public company GEOPARK.

Following his graduation from Notre Dame, Timothy became the general manager for Sentry International's Shanghai office where he worked under Sentry CEO and future CIA Director Mike Pompeo. While at Sentry, Tim had the tough, but extremely rewarding task of traveling all over China. Tim's job took him to more than 25 different factories in seven different provinces, an experience which further enhanced his language and cultural skills.

Following his work for Sentry, Timothy became the Vice President of Lario Logistics where he was instrumental in the development of the Bakken Oil Express crude-by-rail terminal in North Dakota that during its heyday transported upwards of 100,000 barrels a day out of the prolific Bakken formation.

However, Tim’s itch to continue to develop his Chinese and business skills never went away, and in 2014 Timothy decided to continue his studies at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where he graduated with a Masters of Business Administration in 2016. During his time at HKUST, Tim also worked as Vice President of Asia Markets for Lario Oil and Gas, spearheading their EB5 marketing and sales efforts throughout China.

In the weeks prior to his death, Tim had formed his own agency for raising EB5 financing in China for the development of infrastructure projects throughout the United States. He was also a founding partner of Reunion Capital, an investment fund he began with his HKUST MBA classmates.

Timothy was a pilot, an avid chess player, by ear pianist, and expert sailor. Having accumulated a large book collection, he read extensively over a wide area of subjects including philosophy, economics, art, literature, astronomy, and physics.

Despite his remarkable knowledge and extraordinary accomplishments, Timothy was humble and unassuming to a fault, seeking first to learn from others, and always putting them first. His greatest talent was being the most loving, genuinely sweet, and loyal family member and friend to all who knew him.
